Farm to Family Connection – currently airing Thursday mornings at 7:45 a.m. and 5:45 p.m. on KKYA – 93.1 FM radio in Yankton, SD - shines the spotlight on local farmers, family businesses, rural entrepeneurs, small town celebrations and food and farm professionals who support family agriculture and the "Buy Locally Raised Food" concept.

The primary focus is on family farmers who direct market healthy, quality food products grown right here to local consumers fresh off the farm, through farm stands, farmers markets, online sales, home delivery, local grocers and other outlets.

We hope to heighten awareness in area residents about where they can go during different seasons to purchase locally raised beef, pork, lamb, poultry and eggs, buffalo, elk, ostrich, honey, wine, milk, cheese, fruits and vegetables and much more. We celebrate local eating establishments that feature locally raised food on their menus and we promote farmers markets, caterers, grocers and institutions that feature and utilize local food and products (See our Food Page).

Farm to Family Connection encourages local folks to seek out their roots and enjoy local farm festivals, fairs, rodeos and food-related activities. We also feature local processors, woodcrafters, rural artisans and family businesses based on the farm. So far, we’ve featured over 125 different farms, rural and home based businesses, small towns and festivals in the nearly four years we’ve been on the air.

In that time, after specific farmer surveys were conducted, we learned that one time featured farms received a few new contacts because of the exposure. However, those farms and businesses that were featured more than once each year – perhaps from two to five times during the year, received between 5 and 20 new contacts because of the show. We think that is outstanding, considering the extremely low cost and investment necessary to participate. When we add the show to KYNT – 1450 AM – our sister AM station, in the near future, the exposure will double.

For only $60 of investment, the 2-3 minute Farm to Family Connection show telling your story will air twice. In addition, you can purchase extra 30-second commercials to promote your locally grown food, farm product or goods for an additional $11 per commercial.

Along with being featured in the show, four promotional announcements per day will run six days prior to your program – encouraging people to tune in to hear your story. You will also be featured on our companion website – The site receives between 500-1800 hits daily and includes a local food and farm product directory so folks looking for your goods can find more information about you on our site.

The website, sponsored by Avera Sacred Heart Hospital and the Farm to Family Connection Project, funded by a grant from W.K. Kellogg Foundation, offers audio clips of your show, complete program transcripts, your contact information and even a photo of you or your farm if you provide us with one, as well as local food recipes, wellness tips and direct marketing and purchasing information.

Dates for 2008 are filling fast, so please call us as soon as possible to line up your date on Farm to Family Connection, even if you aren’t interested in scheduling until fall or next winter.

We believe buying locally grown and locally made is one of the best rural economic strategies there is, encouraging family agriculture, rural creativity and good land stewardship by keeping families who work the land and live on the land profitable. So we hope you will consider being one of our featured local heroes. We want to tell your story.
